Lassen Volcanic National Park

This was a great day trip. The park was formed over hundreds of thousands of years by volcanic heat and plate tectonics. I enjoyed the Kohm Yah-mah-nee Visitor Center when there is a film and wonderful displays. Through both there was given a “nod” to our native American brothers and sisters, acknowledging that they were the first inhabitants and were treated brutally by the white settlers. In 1914, in a burst of steam, the Lassen Peak came alive after 27,000 years. It is hard for me to imagine that, in this area, we are sitting on top of a volcano! I took two great hikes today – a relatively short hike around Manzanita Lake. Although not terribly unique a family of deer greeted me as well as a unique trail signal – the pinecones are quite large! For the second hike – see an additional post.
