Sequoia National Park

I had a delightful visit with my cousin, Phyllis and her husband, Bob. We took a drive through Carmel-by-the Sea – thought I would include a picture of a lovely view.

When I checked into the campground, I was informed that any vehicle over 22″ cannot drive in the park. Our camper is 23″. Well, I decided to check out the park, which is about an hour drive from the campsite. I was delighted to find out that I could drive anywhere in the park. It is advised that vehicles over 22″ not drive the roads, due to the curvy nature of the roads. Well, after driving the road, I can understand! There are many turns whose speed limit is 10 or 15 mph, Needless to say, I pulled over a number of times to let others pass. It was a beautiful drive.

I hiked down (1/2 mile) to the General Sherman Tree (and a 1/2 mile up!). Elevation was at 7,000 ft with advice to take it slow going up. The General Sherman tree is the largest tree in volume. Some trivia – if the tree trunk could be filled with water, it would be enough for a bath every day for 27 years. Not sure how they arrived at that! I think I’ve seen the tallest, oldest and largest trees. As I’ve learned, the Redwood trees grow taller than the Sequoia; Sequoia trees are fast growing and more dense than a Redwood.

Another hike was the Congress Trail. I wondered about the name until I came across two groves – The Senate and The Congress. Unfortunately, I missed the Presidents Tree.

Again, beautiful pics! You really capture those redwoods. My grandfather’s middle name was “Sherman” (which we kids always thought was weird). He died when I was three, but later I became interested in why he was named that way. His father was from Grand Rapids, MI, so there was no southern influence. Kind of a mystery…still to be discovered.

Glad we are connecting through the blog. This has been helpful for me to do to document the trip. Glad folks are connecting. Will be at the Grand Canyon on Wednesday. I have a sunset jeep tour – not sure what else will evolve. So far great weather. Looks like it will be cooler at the Grand Canyon. Enjoy fall in Boston – always a beautiful time.
