I’ve am used to talking some time in the morning and not rushing off to the parks. I am reading Come, Have Breakfast, by Elizabeth Johnson which gives me a reflection for the day on God and the Earth. Another one, Sisters of the Earth, by Lorraine Anderson is a collection of women’s prose and poetry about nature. These are great reads as I enter the national parks.
Kings Canyon is the deepest canyon in the United States. As I usually do, I check in with a ranger as to how s/he might suggest spending the day. Doing so, I was informed that the Kings Canyon road will be closed after today – in fact the forecast for the next day was a frozen mix! The drive through the canyon took about 90 minutes covering 35 miles or so, with a stop at Grizzly Falls. I started at the top and worked my way down to the canyon floor where the King River flowed. This was followed by a couple of short hikes – General Grant (another big sequoia) and North Grove Loop. By the way, there are sequoias named after a woman – Clara Barton and Susan B. Anthony- but I didn’t have my phone with me to take pictures!
I’ll be heading to Trevor and Nikki’s house tomorrow and am excited to meet Aiden, just 10 months old. Check in again after November 5 when I will be at the Grand Canyon. Certainly a day when we will pray for the elections and the future of our country.
