Day 6 – April 14, 2025 Rubieas

it is about 9:30 and I just returned from dinner and look forward to sharing a few thoughts. I knew that today would involve a steep climb … had no idea what that meant! It was pretty grueling and complicated a bit with a day of rain. Rhonda caught up with me and we compared experiences. It was good to connect with her. I met two young women from Taiwan. They asked me if I was okay and, I think kept an eye on me for a while. We all stopped at a small cafe and enjoyed a bit of lunch together. Others from Taiwan joined and at one point one of the young women asked me my age. I responded, 75. There were some audible gasps. We talked about why we were making the reason why we were making the Camino. They were basically wanting to travel beyond Asia. I mentioned that I was making the Camino for religious reasons and I recently retired. “You work a very long time!” was the response. I mentioned I was a Catholic sister … a nun … no idea what that is for them. Earlier, I also walked a bit with a family from Ireland – the children were about 10 and 12. What a great family experience.

The plan today was that I would hike to Rubiaes and then pick up a taxi back the hotel where I stayed last night. Well, it took me longer than planned so I missed that taxi so I would catch one of my own. While I was hiking, a man stopped his car and asked me where I was going. I explained the plan. He said, “How can I help you?” I mentioned that a lift so I could get my taxi. Fernando, a former air traffic controller, said he would take me to my hotel – save the expense of getting a taxi. We had a delightful visit. What a wonder of the gifts that await me on the Camino.

As we were driving to the hotel, a faint rainbow appeared. Tomorrow I am on my way to Tui and a break day on Wednesday.

Oh, Jane. I’m just getting caught up with you for the first time today. What a journey you are on, what an inspiration you are. Your daily stories and pictures are such a joy and I will remember now to check in daily. Be well and walk with God’s grace!

OMG – I remember that day – it was the worse walk of the entire trip. Some friends from WSU met up and walked 3 days with us. We told them to go ahead and we’d meet them at the hotel but they waited for us at the top of the climb because: “it was dangerous and they wanted to be sure we made it.” It was the first time on the Camino I felt my age. If it’s any consolation, it only gets easier from now on. We spent 2 nights in Tui. It was a nice break. It looks like you are “experiencing” the Camino. Light and difficult days with plenty to reflect on. May you continue to enjoy it.

Right. The pilgrims from Taiwan expressed concern as to whether I would make it. I did – slowly but I did that climb.
